Geger is the original Nusa Dua surf spot, located at the southern end of the Nusa Dua stretch just north of Nikko. Named from the Balinese word for "uproar" – after the large surf that regularly pounds this shoreline. Very deep water offshore amplifies swell size; Geger picks up the most swell on the east coast and is never flat. The Left offers views across to Lembongan, Penida, and Mount Agung. The Right is located in front of the Mulia Hotel and St Regis, near the Bali National Golf Course.
SWELL DIRECTIONS: S, SSW, SW. WIND: West
SURF HEIGHT: Small to Large – never flat, can be Hawaiian size on the biggest swells
ABILITY LEVEL: Intermediate, Advanced, Expert`
SPOT RATING: Left – Fun. Right – Perfect
SHOULDER BURN: Left – Medium. Right – Exhausting.
WATER QUALITY: Clean
BOTTOM: Coral
BEST SEASON: Wet Season (November - March)
HAZARDS
Strong currents, getting caught inside on even small days, shallow reef at low tide. On the Right the current makes it extremely hard to paddle back out after riding a wave.
ACCESS
Left: Paddle from stairs, drift south with current. Right: Walk on reef at low tide or take a boat at high tide. Boat drop from Mengiat beach recommended on bigger days.
Three peaks that increase in size and power the further from shore. Clean, fast lefts with occasional rights and barrel potential under the right conditions. Works best at low to mid tide – specifically when the reef is just covered with water.
Inside Peak: Slowest section, easiest takeoffs. Best at mid tide on a medium swell. Too shallow at low tide, disappears on large long-period swells. Suitable for intermediates.
Middle Peak: Faster and more powerful with steeper takeoffs and the longest rides – possible to connect through the inside peak into the channel. Wave selection is critical; many waves break too fast to make. Look for a defined peak and tapered wall.
Outside Peak: Largest and most intense section, positioned before the deep Lombok Strait drop-off. Swells jack up quickly and break harder than expected – sometimes called "Elevator". Shorter ride but barrels available right from takeoff. One of the least surfed waves on the Bukit.
A huge reef without clearly defined sections. Only breaks right due to the reef shape and swell wrapping around the southern Bukit. A fast, powerful wave that rises quickly out of deep water with extremely long rides possible from the first section to the end.
The current is incredibly strong – hard to maintain position, and getting caught inside even on small days means endless paddling back out. A 1-hour session here feels like 2 hours anywhere else. One tactic is to start at the first peak in the far south and work your way down, ending at Chicken Wings.
At low tide you can walk across the reef. When there's enough water, a boat drop at the first peak is recommended. Jumping off the boat can be intimidating on a big day – deep water, disorienting lineup.
The end section of Geger Right, separated by a 20-metre deep water section. Swell is always a bit smaller and the current softer – popular with intermediate surfers. A high-quality wave with rides up to 300 metres. Best at mid to high tide.
Wet season (October–April) when westerly winds blow offshore. Dry season trade winds are directly onshore and very strong in July–August. Occasional dry-season windows exist when the trades back off – often empty when clean. Early mornings in dry season can work before winds kick in around 9–10 am.
If Geger is too big or choppy from a SW wind, Sri Lanka is always smaller and more sheltered from cross winds.
No. Strong currents, powerful waves, shallow reef, and long paddle distances make both Left and Right unsuitable for beginners.
Left: Inside and middle peaks work for intermediates on head-high and under days at mid tide.
Right: Only suitable for intermediates who are strong paddlers on smaller days. Chicken Wings is the best intermediate option with less current. On most days Geger Right is advanced surfers only.
